Turmeric keeps you looking young

2 min read

The proven health benefits of turmeric are well known, we've reported on its abilities as a natural pain killer and its role in brain health - further to this, scientific research has established it as beneficial to cardiovascular health, a supporter of healthy cholesterol levels, and a powerful free radical scavenger.

However new research is now showing that turmeric may help keep you looking young - possibly slowing down the rate at which the skin ages.

Turmeric is one of the highest antioxidant-containing spices

Turmeric is one of the highest antioxidant-containing spices on the ORAC scale - ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity and is a scale that measures the amount of antioxidants in foods. It comes in at 6th place ranking just below cloves and cinnamon. Antioxidants protect the integrity of the skin by stopping free radicals from destroying it's texture and elasticity.

Most of us are aware that ultraviolet light (the sun's rays) is a key contributor to the visible signs of ageing - this is why many moisturisers and foundation products are fortified with an SPF. The powerful antioxidant properties of Turmeric also protect the skin from the damaging effects of ultraviolet light.

Turmeric's anti-ageing power extends beyond it's antioxidant properties

Research has shown that Turmeric's anti-ageing power extends beyond it's antioxidant properties though, with studies indicating it inhibits the functioning of a key enzyme called elastase. Elastase reduces the ability of elastin from forming and Elastin is a protein, along with collagen, needed to keep the skin smooth and pliable as well as helping it to keep it in it's original position when pinched or wrinkled. In fact, turmeric, in vitro, may inhibit elastase by up to 65%.
