A recent study published in the journal Nutrition suggests there are metabolic benefits to drinking tomato juice. The research suggests daily supplementation decreases body fat and increases circulating levels of adiponectin – a hormone released from fat cells which plays an important role in the regulation of insulin sensitivity and fat metabolism.
The study from Taiwan used data from 25
young and healthy women, it required them to drink a daily glass of 280ml of
tomato juice for 8 weeks, while maintaining their usual diet and exercise
regime.
Tomato juice contains the antioxidant Lycopene
The daily glass of tomato juice contained
32.5mg of lycopene. Lycopene is a carotene and phytochemical and is known for it's antioxidant properties. It is found in red and pink coloured
fruits and vegetables, predominantly tomatoes - extensive research has shown its benefits to heart
health and in reducing the risk of metabolic diseases.
Results showed reduction in waist size and body weight
The 32.5mg of lycopene contained within the daily glass of tomato juice
was associated with an average reduction in waist circumference of 1.6cm and
0.5 kg reduction in body weight.
Anti-inflammatory response also measured
Furthermore there was a 22% decrease in a key marker of
inflammation called MCP-1 and a 25% decrease in adiponectin levels.
The researches concluded that despite no
changes in overall food intakes there was a significant reduction in body
weight, body fat, waist circumference and BMI, along with reductions in
cholesterol and MCP-1.
The study did lack a control group unfortunately, and it was conducted on healthy women of normal weight therefore findings cannot be extended to overweight or obese individuals.
